University Signage Policy

To maintain design standards for all interior and exterior University signage.  These standards apply to barrier free, ADA, traffic control and informational, designating and directional signage.  The intention of these guidelines is to help produce a University signage system that is in conformance to all applicable Federal and State regulations, NMU policies and is both functional and promotes ease of travel.

This policy applies to all University building, grounds, and vehicles.

It is the policy of Northern Michigan University that all campus signage must be in compliance with University approved standards.

Whenever a university department requires signage to be placed on any University vehicle, facility or grounds, the department must:

Submit a request to Engineering and Planning indicating the need for the sign, the
location, text and the account number to be charged.

Engineering and Planning reviews the request to ensure it complies with NMU's
design standards.

If the request does not meet the design standards the department will be notified.

If the request does meet the design standards Engineering and Planning will
coordinate the purchase of the sign and installation with appropriate requesting
department funding identified.
