Purpose
It is the Policy of Northern Michigan University to provide an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) at various locations throughout campus to make early defibrillation accessible to students, faculty, staff, and other persons who experience sudden cardiac arrest. The purpose of this policy and associated procedure is to establish guidelines for the placement, maintenance and use of automated external defibrillators at Northern Michigan University.

Policy
General
- The Northern Michigan University Health Center Chief of Staff shall act as the Medical Authority for the AED program at NMU.
- Each department having employees authorized and trained to use AED's in the workplace will appoint an AED Program Coordinator to be responsible for overseeing the department training program and the care, maintenance, and security of the AED units in their area. Departments must provide the name of the AED Program Coordinator along with the location of the AED to Public Safety and Police Services.
- Only NMU employees designated by the AED Program Coordinator(s) and those properly trained and certified will be authorized to use an AED.
- The Director of Public Safety and the University Medical Authority will be kept informed of the location of the AED's on campus.
