We are so excited to announce that, this October, we will be implementing three new waste reduction programs! A couple have already started, such as flexible plastic recycling at Northern Lights Dining and specialty recycling for NMU residents.

Flexible Plastic

The flexible plastic recycling program collects mainly bread bags from the dining hall and brings them to a flexible plastic collection location(Meijer).

Residential Specialty Recycling

Specialty recycling stations have been installed in two places, one outside Northern Lights Dining, and another outside the Fit Zone. These stations were created so that students could have a place to recycle their “hard to recycle” items. Each station has receptacles for glass, flexible plastic, squeeze pouches, toothbrushes and toothpaste, razors, and used pens/markers.

Starbucks Waste Reduction

In the next couple of weeks, we will also be installing a waste sorting station in the lobby next to the Jamrich Starbucks. The goal of this program is to reduce post-consumer waste that is produced at Starbucks. This waste station will include liquid disposal, composting, recycling, and a landfill disposal bin. Additionally, each waste receptacle will be labeled with Starbucks-specific instructions on what items can be disposed of where.
