We are happy to welcome Anna Solberg as the MI Healthy Climate Corps’ Climate Action Coordinator at Northern Michigan University! Anna moved back to Marquette from Pennsylvania, where she worked in community engagement for the Conservation Voters of Pennsylvania and PennFuture. Anna is an NMU alumni who graduated in 2015 with a Bachelor’s in Environmental Studies and Sustainability with a minor in Art and Design. Anna feels welcome back to the Marquette area with the comfort of many things remaining the same, however, she is excited to learn of the changes since she left.
The MI Healthy Climate Corps - Climate Action Coordinator position helps NMU stay aligned with NMU’s Strategic Plan, stay on track with NMU’s Carbon Neutrality Plan action items, and keep NMU aligned with Michigan climate targets. The Climate Action Coordinator collaborates with NMU’s Assistant Vice President of Sustainability, Jes Thompson. Anna brings a strong skill set in community engagement, event planning, and networking to her new role. She will facilitate departments and communities to come together to make meaningful change, and effectively communicate the sustainable stories happening throughout NMU’s campus, and beyond.
Anna is hopeful to see meaningful change in sustainability work at NMU, and to see “not only what we dream will happen, but what we will make happen.” Anna is passionate about her work, and about sustainability as she says, “Sustainability is simply ensuring that we are making our resources, our communities, and our ways of life last for years to come without sacrificing or degrading those things. I selfishly have dedicated myself to a career in sustainability because I want to ensure that we have these resources long into the future. I want to share Lake Superior's sweeping waterfront with my children and grandchildren, I want to sit on my porch and hear the same birds singing when I'm 80 as I do now, and I want to make sure others have the same ability to experience the beauty of this world that I have. These resources are part of my health, my heritage, and my home.” Anna is excited to get settled in her new role and start working towards positive changes on NMU’s campus and in the community. “I left 10 years ago, and have always wanted to come back.” Anna’s love for the area and the community of Marquette makes her a wonderful fit, and we are so happy to have her here!
