Founded in August 2023 with the goal to make Northern the greenest in the GLIAC, Green Athletics is a student-driven working group consisting of NMU student-athletes, coaches, and other administrators striving to create and promote sustainable changes within NMU's Athletic Department.
Through collaboration and communication with SHINE, NMU Athletics, and other campus entities, Green Athletics hopes to create long-lasting change throughout NMU, the surrounding Marquette community, and the world beyond. Green Athletics serves as a "sustainability spokesperson" for NMU Athletics and helps contribute to the growing number of sustainability initiatives throughout NMU.
This year, Green Athletics is already off to a great start. In just the first few weeks of the semester, 25 new student-athletes have joined the group and its mission. These ambitious and passionate members are looking to host a number of events throughout the 2024-2025 year, including multiple new zero waste events, team apparel swaps, sustainability “storytimes”, and the main “brainchild” of the group: a sustainability education campaign. This campaign will include 1-on-1 meetings with each NMU athletic team to discuss sustainability practices within their specific team and how these efforts can be improved.
To follow along with the group’s successes and mission, go to SHINE’s website under Green Athletics. For any questions, ideas, or comments, feel free to contact Green Athletics’ founder Makaylee Kuhn at makuhn@nmu.edu.
The photos are from a Campus Clean-Up around the athletic facilities on September 26, 2024. The group picked up over 20 lbs of waste and recycling.
