Taking place at the Northern Center on NMU's campus in Marquette from Monday 25 September through Wednesday 27 September 2023, this second annual event will bring together multiple state, federal, and civilian cybersecurity resources to connect with regional cybersecurity practitioners and decision makers.  The schedule is tailored to allow for flexible participation across topics, including hands-on training and workshop activities. Multiple afternoon breakout sessions will allow for sector focused (K12 Tech, Critical Infrastructure, Small Business, Healthcare, Local Government) discussions and sessions each day.   

Day 1 | Sep 25

Cyber Threat Landscape and Incident Prevention: Day 1 morning sessions are designed to provide attendees the latest information and updates on State of Michigan Cybersecurity initiatives, the current threat landscape and actors, and cybersecurity incident response planning. Multiple sector specific breakout sessions will follow lunch. Please join us for a networking reception at the end of the day.

Day 2 | Sep 26  

Cyber Incident Response and Resources: Day 2 morning sessions are focused on incident response and resources. Hear from and engage with federal, state, and local cybersecurity professionals regarding resources, services, and grants available to increase cyber hygiene in your organization.  Multiple sector specific breakout sessions will follow lunch.

Day 3 | Sep 27 

Workforce Development, Red Team Perspective, and Communications: Day 3 is focused on cybersecurity workforce development and training, understanding the attacker mindset and effective media engagement and communications during a cyber incident response.

The UPCI is hosting the UP Cybersecurity Symposium at the NMU Northern Center in Marquette, Michigan from Tuesday, August 30th to Thursday, September 1st, 2022.

This focused three-day event will bring together multiple state, federal, and civilian cybersecurity resources to connect with regional cybersecurity practitioners and decision-makers. The goal is simple, increase cyber hygiene across the board for the Upper Peninsula. Multiple hands-on training and workshop activities will be available to symposium participants.  

Day 1 | Aug 30

Connections and resources: meet with and hear from federal, state, and local cybersecurity professionals on resources, services, and grants available to you to help increase your cyber hygiene. Day 1 also includes the annual NMU Cybersecurity Industry Advisory Committee meeting as an afternoon breakout session. Please join us for a networking reception at the end of the day.

Day 2 | Aug 31  

Incident response planning and exercise: Participate in a CISA-led incident response planning and incident response workshop. Day 2 also includes the monthly Michigan Cyber Partners meeting and Cybersecurity Apprenticeship working group as breakout sessions.

Day 3 | Sept 1 

Cyber resiliency: Participate in short workshops designed to help you understand your current posture and increase your cyber resiliency. Schedule short small group sessions with federal and state resources to review topics from the workshop specific to your sector focus.

GrrCon is a cybersecurity and hacker conference that takes place in Grand Rapids, MI. This conference is intended for like minded individuals to come and engage with one another.

  • Password Cracking- Break encrypted passwords and discuss the how's and why's of password strength
  • Lock Picking- Practice lock picking and how it relates to hacking
  • Pi-top Programming- Learn the basics of programming in python by creating a crosswalk simulation
  • Cyber Safety- Hear top tips on cyber safety from the Michigan State Police
  • My First CTF- Introduction into the world of capture the flag with a hands on game
  • IoT Hacking- How to find common vulnerabilities of IoT devices and how to test them
