Current Month: April 2024

Image is white with teal border. there is a teal ribbon in the center. Text reads "Sexual Assault Awareness Month, April 2024: building connected communities"

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month!

The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the U.S. on May 7, 1843 and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. NMU chooses to celebrate this month during April, when there are more students on campus. This month is about celebrating Asian and Pacific Islanders in the United States. This month began in 1977 with the proclamation of the first 10 days of May being known as Asian-pacific Heritage week. In 1990 President George H.W. Bush signed an extension making the week-long celebration a month-long celebration.

2023

Aug. 28 - Nov. 03: True Likeness features contemporary portraits from diverse makers in various media, including video, photography, painting, collage, installation, sculpture, printmaking, and drawing. Artists’ identities and those presented through their works provide a snapshot of who we are as a country. Located at the Devos Art Museum during regular hours.

Sept. 16 - Jan. 27: On Saturday, September 16, the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center will be opening a landmark exhibition on the 1820 expedition of Lewis Cass on the Great Lakes. Many noted individuals are part of this story, including Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, Shingabowossin (Chief of the Ojibwe at Bahweting – Sault Ste. Marie), Ozhaguscodaywayquay (Susan Johnston), Charles Trowbridge and David Bates Douglass. For each of these individuals, the expedition would alter their lives, in positive and negative ways. For many of the expedition’s participants, they would leverage the adventure in their pursuit of government appointments and political ambitions. For the Indigenous people, this expedition would begin the process of American settlement of the region and the exploitation of its resources. The impact on their way-of-life and the natural world they relied upon them would be devastating, the effects of which they still struggle to deal with to this day. Located at the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center during regular hours.
