Social, cultural, and environmental diversity of the Cuban experience
In February 2020, students in GC 300 - Regional Studies: World Cultures: Cuba explored the social, cultural, and environmental diversity of the Cuban experience. Before traveling to the county, the class spent four weeks learning about Cuba’s physical environments as well as its historical, agricultural, urban and economic geographies. For two weeks over spring break, the class traveled to the rural eastern part of the island to explore how Cuban communities were adapting to climate change. Working with the organization EcoThropic, twelve students learned about a range of topics including agroecology, watershed management, Cuba’s national parks and conservation programs, and more. When students returned to the US, they were given an opportunity to connect what they had learned in the classroom to the experiences that they had while in Cuba. Throughout the course, particular attention was paid to how economic, cultural and environmental factors have shaped sustainability challenges in Cuba.
