Majors and minor: History major, German Studies major, Spanish minor

What were your favorite moments as an undergrad at NMU?

Playing "Reacting to the Past" role-playing simulations in my history classes, many awesome tournaments with the Quiz Bowl Team, going to Orlando to present my German Heimatfilm research at the National Collegiate Honors Conference, and two fantastic years working in the Center for Student Enrichment.

What were your favorite moments as an LLIS student?

I have so many great memories from my German and Spanish classes. I loved discussing Heimatfilme in Great Works in German Literature with Dr. Zimmer, listening to German pop music with Dr. Sherman, and talking about the latest Real Madrid game to anyone who would listen in Noticias with Profe Joy. Some of my favorite books and short stories from my language classes include "Heimat" by Nora Krug, "Der Knochenmann" by Wolf Haas, "La mujer que llegaba a las seis" by Gabriel García Márquez, and "Los gallinazos sin plumas" by Julio Ramón Ribeyro.

What will you miss most about being an NMU student?

I will miss the friends I made here, my coworkers at the Center for Student Enrichment, the beautiful environment of Marquette, and most of all the Quiz Bowl Team.

What is your favorite place to visit abroad?

The Cusco Region of Peru - the most incredible landscapes I have ever seen and the best food in the world. Also, giant millipedes.

If you met an incoming student, what advice would you give them?

Try to speak and immerse yourself in your chosen language outside of class. For me, listening to German music and watching Spanish soccer broadcasts were a huge help in familiarizing myself with the vocabulary and grammar.
