Majors: Psychology and Spanish
My time at NMU, particularly in learning Spanish, has been invaluable in kickstarting my career and life after college. You’re right—it’s sometimes hard to adequately express just how much I truly mean that. To explain further, my career path has been a bit different from that of many of my peers, especially in terms of why we each chose to immerse ourselves in learning a second language. Many pursued Spanish because they wanted to pass along their love and knowledge of the language to future students. Others were students of writing or healthcare, studying Spanish so they could reach a broader audience and help more people.
For me, I knew I wanted to pursue a business- and sales-centric career. While there’s nothing against studying fields like finance or business, I believe that any program at NMU can set you up for success if you apply yourself. The reason I chose to major in both Spanish and psychology is because I firmly believe that genuine connections with others lead to success in this world. By aspiring to bilingualism, I knew I was expanding my ability to connect with—and, in a career sense, do business with—exponentially more people.
So, when I entered the “real world” and was competing in interviews against candidates with business, sales, or finance majors, my background in Spanish from NMU helped me stand out. It gifted me the ability to connect with a wider range of people, which caught the interest of hiring managers and ultimately gave me an edge. Now in my current career, thanks to NMU, I am the go-to consultant for all of our Spanish-speaking customers.
