October is Campus Sustainability Month!
Campus Sustainability Month is an international celebration of sustainability in higher education. The goal is to raise the visibility of campus sustainability and provide advocates with a platform to deepen engagement around sustainability. Throughout the month, SHINE encourages YOU to engage in becoming sustainability change agents.

Week 1

4 - 5 pm | Sustainable Citizen Badge Skillbuilder - TSB 2901 This skillbuilder provides an overview of key sustainability concepts and shares examples of what NMU is doing to reduce our impact on the planet. You will learn several definitions, gain insights into different aspects of sustainability, and get a variety of tools to help you live lighter on the planet. Positive social change requires many different actions at many different scales, from individuals to institutions. By working together, we can create a more sustainable world. | |

| Saturday, October 4 | 10 - 11:30 pm | Yoga Nidra Experience Yoga Nidra, the yoga of deep rest. This guided practice leads you into a state between waking and sleeping that promotes relaxation, reduces stress, and restores balance. Participants often report better sleep, greater calm, and renewed energy. Open to all levels—no prior yoga experience required. Bring a mat, blanket, and wear comfortable clothing. Bring yoga mat and blanket and wear loose, comfy clothing. Please arrive early. No more entry after the door is closed. |

| Thursday, October 9 | 11 am - 12 pm | EGLE Recycling Myths Webinar This session will help both sustainability professionals and anyone curious about recycling plastics feel informed, empowered, and equipped to cut through the misinformation. |
5:30 - 7 pm | 2nd Annual Mind Over Miles 5k Registration for the 2nd Annual Mind Over Miles 5k is live! The 5k will take place on Thursday, October 9th, 2025 at 5:30pm starting at the Wildcat Statue near Jamrich Hall. Register here. Students, faculty, and staff at NMU can register for free (with the option to purchase a t-shirt), while community members can register for $20, which includes a race t-shirt. 6 - 7 pm | Walk, Bike, Ride: Sustainable Transportation on Campus - Jamrich 1313 Fed up with parking on campus? Want to try a new way to get to class? All are invited to this interactive workshop designed to educate NMU students, faculty, staff, and community members about the resources available to them when it comes to sustainable transportation on campus. | |
5 - 6 pm | Energy in the UP - League of Women Voters - with Jenn Hill This event will cover the history of energy and what's different about the UP, how electricity is produced in the UP and what's next. The presentation will be 35 minutes, followed by a 15 minute Q&A. RSVP here | |
| Saturday, October 11 | 10 am - 6 pm | DNR - Becoming an Outdoors Woman: Exploring Outdoor Skills Join us at the Upper Peninsula Pocket Park in Escanaba for a full-day Becoming an Outdoors Woman program! This hands-on event is designed to help women build confidence and skills in a variety of outdoor activities. Participants will have the opportunity to explore:
Whether you're a beginner or looking to sharpen your skills, this fun and supportive environment is the perfect place to connect with nature and other outdoor enthusiasts! The cost is $20. | Monday, October 13 | 6 - 7 pm | Jam Making Workshop Join the Hoop House in learning how to make and preserve strawberry jam! In this hands-on workshop, we'll be exploring the basics of jam making and water bath canning, with attendees being able to cook, can, and take home their own jar of strawberry jam! |
| Tuesday, October 14 | 5 - 6 pm | Green Fund Workshop Come learn about the Green Fund, a student-led paid fee that funds student-led sustainability initiatives, brainstorm ideas, and potentially submit a Green Fund Proposal. We recommend attendees bring a laptop. |

| Friday, October 17 | 8:30 - 4:30 pm | Woodshed Fuel Field Trip - Register here! You are cordially invited to join The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and the Northern Woodshed Project in a day of learning about working forests in the UP on Friday, October 17. The event is free and will take place at the Slate River Forest, which includes over 10,000 acres of prime examples of sustainable forest management practices, including harvesting for traditional forest products as well as carbon projects. TNC foresters will provide a tour of multiple sites around the property, and will explain the diverse managements practices and intended outcomes. |

| Saturday, October 18 | 12 - 3 pm | Silver Lead Creek Clean Up Day With the construction of the Silver Lead Creek Greenway well underway this summer, the Marquette County Planning Division is hosting a creek clean up event at Silver Lead Creek. The clean-up will start at noon. We will be meeting at the trail head for the KI Sawyer Fitness Trail at the end of Ryan Lipinski Drive, off of Voodoo Avenue in KI Sawyer. We will provide gloves and bags for clean-up. Please dress for the weather, we will be there, rain or shine! We hope you can join us! |

| Tuesday, October 21 | 3 - 4:30 pm | Forest Bathing with Jacquie Medina Please register to attend a guided forest bathing session with NMU WellBeing and Jacquie Medina from SHHP. This session will take place on Tuesday October 21st from 3pm-4:30pm. This opportunity is being extended to faculty, staff, and students and will be capped at 30 participants. Learn the art of visible mending in this hands-on workshop covering three essential stitches: darning, baseball stitch, and blanket stitch. 7 pm | Free showing of SEEDS The NMU Center for Native American Studies is thrilled to host a free showing of *SEEDS* written and directed by, Kaniehtiio Horn (Mohawk) in Jamrich Hall 1100. SEEDS is a mix of humor and horror (just in time for Halloween). Horn may be best known for her portrayal as Deer Lady in the Harjo hit show, *Reservation Dogs*. A conversation with Kaniehtiio Horn will follow the viewing. | |
| Thursday, October 23 | 8 am - 5 pm | Indigenous Perspectives Symposium on Food At Northern Michigan University, the Indigenous Perspectives Symposium serves as a vital platform to celebrate, elevate, and engage with the voices, artistry, and wisdom of Indigenous communities. It is more than a gathering—it’s a movement toward cultural visibility, shared learning, and lasting connection. Held on NMU’s campus at the beautiful Northern Center located in Marquette, Michigan, the symposium brings together Indigenous leaders, scholars, artisans, students, and community members to explore themes of importance to Indigenous Peoples. This year’s theme is focused on food, and how it intersects with sovereignty, identity, storytelling, land, and resilience using a wide range of presentations, performances, and culinary experiences grounded in Indigenous knowledge. |

| Sunday, October 26 | 2:30 - 5:30 pm | Wetmore Pond and Lily Pond Trail Maintenance Join the Conservation Crew for our semesterly NCT trail maintenance at the Wetmore Pond and Lily Pond area. All tools will be provided. If weather allows and we have enough people, we are hoping to work on smaller loops/trails we have not worked on before! Plan on 2-4 hours for this activity. Please bring close-toed shoes, water, and snacks. Meet at the OLA pavilion to carpool. |
| Monday, October 27 | 6 - 7 pm | Dill Pickle Workshop Join the Hoop House for a guided workshop on making and preserving your own dill pickles! In this hands-on workshop, presented we'll be exploring the basics of making and water bath canning practices, with attendees being able to cook, can, and take home their own jar of pickles! In order to get the best flavor it's recommended pickles sit for at least 3 weeks, which makes them perfect to show off at Thanksgiving! |
