One-Year Term Instructional Position in Organic Chemistry at Northern Michigan University

The Department of Chemistry at Northern Michigan University (NMU) in Marquette, MI is seeking applicants for a one-year term instructional position in organic chemistry for the coming 2026-2027 academic year. 

The position will be at either the Assistant Professor or Instructor rank, depending on the candidate's qualifications.  On-campus duties start August 17, 2026, and Fall semester classes begin on August 24, 2026.  NMU is an AAUP-AFT campus so salary (~$61K Instructor/~$72K assistant professor) and benefits are determined by the most recent NMU AAUP-AFT Master Agreement.

Faculty in this position can expect to carry twelve (12) load credits each academic semester.  Teaching assignments may include some combination of the following courses (descriptions of the courses can be found here):

  • CH109 Introductory Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry for the Health Sciences (lectures, labs and/or discussions)
  • CH220 Introduction to Organic Chemistry (lecture and/or lab courses)
  • CH317 Organic Chemistry Laboratory I
  • CH327 Organic Chemistry Laboratory II
  • Other 100 level lab and discussion courses depending on departmental staffing

We frequently need part-time adjunct faculty to teach introductory and general chemistry labs. Minimum qualifications are a bachelor of science degree in chemistry or a related field, as well as some post-graduate coursework and/or chemistry experience. A master of science degree, or higher, in chemistry or a related field is preferred.

In addition, we occasionally have part-time teaching opportunities in introductory chemistry recitations or other labs. These positions require a master of science degree or higher.
