Planning your future

Faculty and staff in the Department of Earth, Environmental and Geographical Sciences cannot over-emphasize how important it is to meet with your academic advisor and to take personal responsibility for understanding your plan of study. In addition to assisting students with their semester schedules, EEGS faculty mentors and our Success Advisors also do the following:

  • Review your unofficial degree evaluation, which contains a record of your completed coursework and grades;
  • Process course substitutions and directed study paperwork as needed;
  • Help you understand how course sequence, prerequisite coursework, general education requirements, and double-counting affect your plan of study;
  • Recommend complementary minors and courses;
  • Assist in resolving scheduling issues so that you graduate in a timely fashion;
  • Discuss internship, graduate school, and career opportunities.

Winter 2025 Course Offerings

Prerequisite courses are required before you can enroll in many courses needed for your degree. Knowledge obtained from prerequisite courses provides you with the skills needed to succeed in future courses. If you have not completed the stated prerequisite(s), you will receive an error message while trying to enroll. Remember to plan ahead and to take the appropriate prerequisites early based on course offerings.

Prerequisite courses will be listed as the indented open-bulleted courses below.

We strongly encourage you to read the Advising Notes for details on course prerequisites and a tentative plan for course offerings in Winter 2025, as well as review the information flyers for Winter 2025 courses.

Preparing for Course Registration, Winter 2025

1. Review the Winter 2025 Course Scheduling Book PDFs found at the University Registrar's site under Current News. You may also search for the courses through myNMU after the schedule has been finalized, about one week before registration begins. Pay particular attention to the section number, course title, and building/room to determine the course format. Check whether the course will

  • Meet on-campus (section number 01, 02, 03, etc.)
  • Be asynchronous Web-based (meet online with no specific days/times with section numbers 50, 51, etc.)
  • Be synchronous Web-based (meet on-line with specific days/times with section number 60, 61, etc.)
  • Be hybrid (in-person some of the time with Web-based activities for the remainder of the contact hours, with section number 70, 71, etc.)

2. Review the Advising Notes for guidance as you prepare for registration.

3. Review the set of flyers for Winter 2025 describing the courses we are offering in the summer and fall terms.

4. Schedule an appointment with your academic advisor prior to your course registration date/time. Look for emails from your advisor telling you their preferred way of scheduling an appointment. Please contact eegs@nmu.edu if you want help scheduling an advising appointment.

5. Note that any holds (e.g., advisor-, financial-, transcript-related) placed on your account will prevent you from registering at your designated registration day/time until the holds are lifted. Call the number listed nest to the hold in ESP to find out more details.

6. Figure out what time your registration window opens at this link. Remember that the time is based on credits already earned, not including credits that are in progress this semester. Guidelines for how the waitlist works are here.

Dates of Importance

The Registrar’s Office will e-mail audit notifications to eligible students. Students must have completed 87 credit hours.

  • Winter 2025 registration for graduate students and many seniors begins on Friday, November 1. Most students register soon thereafter. You can look up your registration time in myNMU and at the Registrar's Registration Week page.
  • The last day to drop a Fall 2024 full-semester course with a “W” grade is Friday, December 6.
