Are you looking for ways to get involved on campus in ways that matter?
Consider joining us as a Graduate Student Ambassador.
What is a Graduate Student Ambassador? Grad Ambassadors are graduate students who volunteer to be a voice for graduate students in specific settings during the academic year. Grad Ambassadors will be called upon when a graduate student voice is needed for a specific event.
What kinds of things would a Grad Ambassador do? Grad Ambassadors may be asked to represent their opinion as a graduate student at meetings with the NMU Foundation, Academic Affairs, consultant firms, university event planning meetings (i.e. Commencement or Homecoming), prospective or incoming student informational events, or other requests that arise.
Who can be a Grad Student Ambassador? Any active and enrolled graduate student at NMU! Online students who do not have access to campus can also serve, as some opportunities are entirely via video call or email.
Will Grad Ambassadors be compensated? The Grad Ambassador role is a volunteer position. It is not a job and there will be no paid compensation. That does not mean there aren't perks. Students serving as ambassadors will be issued a Graduate Ambassador virtual badge for their resume. They may also use the opportunities to learn skills and network with professionals, and will receive their choice of College of Grad Studies swag (including the famed CGS&R flannel shirt).
Would a Grad Ambassador be required to attend events? No. Grad Ambassadors will be contacted with opportunities when they arise. They can choose to serve with an opportunity if they have interest, time, and the ability to. However, students must serve on at least one open opportunity in order to be issued the Grad Ambassador badge and be eligible to include the status on their resume.
How will potential Ambassadors learn about available opportunities? When the Grad College learns of a Grad Ambassador service opportunity, they will email (through your NMU email address) all students who have signaled their willingness to serve as an ambassador. The opportunity spot will be filled by students who respond in whatever number is required to fill the role.
Is this a student government role? No. Student government has elected representatives, set meetings, and formalized influence. Grad Student Ambassadors will represent their own opinions as a grad student at Northern on an ad hoc basis.
What is expected of a Grad Ambassador? Graduate Student Ambassadors are expected to take the opportunities presented seriously by committing to the time and availability required if they have volunteered to fill a role. They are also expected to comport themselves professionally and appropriately while interacting with others in their ambassador role.
How do I sign up to be a potential Graduate Student Ambassador? Sign up through this form. Once submitted, you will be contacted with confirmation and more information.
