About the Team
The NMU Sailing Club puts Northern Michigan's largest natural resource to good use. Based out of Lower Harbor, the Sailing Club sets sail on Lake Superior. The racing members compete at regattas across the Midwest under the Midwest Collegiate Sailing Association (MCSA), a regional denomination of the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA). The team welcomes students who have no sailing experience, but would like to learn! "Recreational Member" status is available for those who don't yet feel comfortable racing.
Details
Dues: Dues vary each year, but generally are $200. These costs cover Marquette Yacht Club membership, regatta fees, boat maintenance, MCSA dues and dock usage. Members are also required to purchase a PEIF pass for the year.
Participants Must Supply: A life jacket is preferred, but we do have extras just in case! No need to have a boat, those are supplied by the club.
Time & Travel Commitments
Practice Times: The only way to become a better sailor is through practice. The fall season begins with the start of the school year and ends around October when the temperatures hit freezing. Practices are held Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at 4pm. There are no practices during the spring season, but we still have regattas!
Travel: We have the potential to travel all around the Midwest, but typically we have regattas in lower Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Minnesota. We usually travel to four or five regattas in the fall and one or two in the spring. It is not required to attend the regattas, but it is a great way to meet other students from different teams and see what competitive sailing is all about!
