DR. AMY HAMILTON - NMU FACULTY FEATURE

Dr. Amy Hamilton is a distinguished professor at Northern Michigan University in the English Department. Dr. Hamilton’s recent courses at NMU include Native American Oral Traditions (EN 314), Introduction to Gender and Sexuality in Literature (EN 250), American Literature II: Emergent National Voices, 1800-1865 (EN 371), and Ecocriticism and Environmental Justice (EN 595). She has a strong focus in interdisciplinary education and collaboration across her teaching, research, and writing.

Dr. Hamilton teaches courses in the Masters of English program which boasts three unique concentrations: the Literature concentration, the Writing and Literature Studies concentration, and the Literature and the Environment concentration. The Literature and the Environment concentration is interdisciplinary, melding the world of english and environmental studies together. Some experiential learning opportunities are available through this program, including the Island Experience class where students spend several nights on an island taking in the natural world around them, and learning how to put their feelings throughout the experience into words.

Dr. Hamilton was recently appointed to be the co-president of the Association for the Study of Literature and the Environment (ASLE)! In her new role as co-president, Dr. Hamilton hopes to continue to facilitate the meaningful and impactful work that ASLE does as an organization. She also hopes to facilitate the conversation of how to assist in the crisis of unhoused populations, and to promote the advocacy of BIPOC, and local groups in the locations of ASLE’s conferences.
