Anything Goes

Music, dance, laughs and the age-old tale of boy meets girl... this show is delightful, delicious and de-lovely!

ANYTHING GOES is set aboard the ocean liner S. S. American, where nightclub singer/evangelist Reno Sweeney is en route from New York to England. Her pal Billy Crocker has stowed away to be near his love, Hope Harcourt, but the problem is Hope is engaged to the wealthy Lord Evelyn Oakleigh. Joining this love triangle on board the luxury liner are Public Enemy #13, Moonface Martin and his sidekick-in-crime Erma. With the help of some elaborate disguises, tap-dancing sailors and good old-fashioned blackmail, Reno and Martin join forces to help Billy in his quest to win Hope’s heart.

A Note from the Director

“At words poetic, I’m so pathetic that I always have found it best, instead of getting ‘em off my chest, to let ‘em rest. Unexpressed…”

And usually, I would agree with the illustrious (and incredibly verbose) Cole Porter on that one, but in this case, I’ll make an exception.

In 2011, I was cast in the Original Revival Company of Anything Goes at Roundabout Theatre starring Sutton Foster and Joel Grey! I was in the ensemble and understudied two of the four Angels. Working with the brilliant Kathleen Marshall, watching Sutton create her Tony Award-winning performance, joking with Joel Grey, and building lifelong friendships were just a few of the many gifts I got from this show. The biggest gift of all, however, was an afternoon in December when I got the call from our Production Stage Manager that I would be going on as Reno Sweeney that evening. I was a “late addition” cover and was NEVER supposed to go on…but that night, I took the final bow on a Broadway stage. Truly a dream come true.

I’ll admit the thought of revisiting this show as Director/Choreographer terrified me. But I remembered one of my favorite things I learned from Sutton Foster - during a talk-back with some students after a performance of Anything Goes, she was asked for one piece of advice. THE piece of advice that would have the most impact on a young performer. Her answer? “Say yes to the things that scare you.” And here we are!

I have loved working on this show at NMU. Our students never cease to amaze me with their dedication, their willingness to try new things (and go for them 110%), and their positivity. Bringing a whole new generation of performers onto this silly, frothy, madcap cruise liner that is still making this wildly funny Transatlantic crossing 90 years after its original “launch” in 1934 has been yet another dream come true.

Enjoy the crossing, folks.
