Courtney Anderson Kelly (she/hers) is an Assistant Professor of Theatre at Northern Michigan University and a freelance Costume Designer and Wardrobe Technician. She holds an MFA in Theatre with a concentration in Costume Design and Technology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a BA from Northern Michigan University, where she studied Theatre, French, and English Education. In addition, she holds a Michigan Professional Teaching Certificate for Secondary Education, along with educator licenses in both California and Maryland.
As a white, cisgender lesbian artist, Courtney is passionate about engaging in projects that explore family structures, 2SLGBTQIA+ narratives, women's stories, and environmental sustainability. She particularly enjoys the creative challenges of designing for new works and is a strong advocate for up-cycling in costume production.
Courtney brings over fifteen years of professional experience across a broad spectrum of performance venues, including university theatre, national tours, Off-Broadway, Equity/regional theatres, theme parks, community arts organizations, and high school drama programs. Her work has taken her to locations across the country, including New York City, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Nebraska, and Maine.
Originally from Midland, Michigan, Courtney now resides in Marquette with her wife, Mary, their dog, and their cat. Outside of her professional work, she enjoys walking along the shores of Lake Superior and hosting board game nights with friends and family.
