A Note from the Director

“Seek happiness in tranquility and avoid ambition at all costs,” Victor warns immediately after passionately recalling how his scientific accomplishments were his alone and that only he “should be reserved to discover so astonishing a secret”.

I find it fascinating how upon examining the path of his life, Victor wishes he could have experienced a more subdued, family-oriented, grateful and present existence, and yet, I believe, if he had the option to do it all over again, would’ve repeated his ambitious ‘mistakes’.  Perfectionism and ambition are two qualities that result from three fears: abandonment, loss, and intimacy.  If you are great, you will be adored.  If you are better than everyone else, you will never be rejected.  If you are too busy to be still, you will never have to suffer through the pangs of quiet, genuine intimacy with another person, or grieve the death of a parent or loved one.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein has stood the test of time as a deeply satisfying horror fiction centered around bringing back the dead.  The novel’s plot has been reincarnated in hundreds of modern-day horror themes and the “Creature” himself has it’s own “Wiki Fandom” page.  Upon receiving the assignment to direct this production with an opening night on Halloween, I thought, what a ‘Slam Dunk’!  The reputation of this classic story would do half of the work for me-I just have to step aside and tell the story.  What I hadn’t anticipated upon my reacquaintance with the novel, was that I would feel profoundly moved.  As a parent of a toddler and a person who struggles with intimate commitment, I felt shaken by the question of exactly how much control we have on the outcome of our children.  I felt moved by the Creature’s inextinguishable desire to be loved and seen by his Creator even after experiencing heartbreaking abandonment and hate, and the unexplainable discomfort Victor felt when faced with gentle, consistent love and familial expectation.  Ironically, whilst pondering my own existential crisis around the themes in this book, my partner and father to our son, Alastar Dimitrie, gently offered his original adaptation as a source of further exploration, and in working with him closely on bringing this version of Frankenstein to life, I was able to connect the dots between personal ambition and familial connection due to our purposeful collaboration.  Like the flame that ignites the start of the Creature’s breath, this project reignited a spark of my own sense of purpose and belonging.

“You are not alone,”-Victor Frankenstein, (from Frankenstein an Original Adapatation by Alastar Dimitrie).
