James "Jimmy" Ludwig

Head of B.F.A. Acting, Assistant Professor | jiludwig@nmu.edu

James "Jimmy" Ludwig is an accomplished American actor, director, and educator with a professional career spanning nearly four decades. Known for his extensive work on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and in regional theater, he has also made various appearances across television and film.

In recent years, Ludwig has shifted a significant portion of his focus toward mentoring the next generation of performers, serving as an Assistant Professor and leading the award-winning BFA Acting program at Northern Michigan University (NMU).

Ludwig built a highly diverse resume during his nearly 30 years based in New York City, demonstrating exceptional versatility across musical theater, classic drama, and physical performance art.

He made his Broadway debut in Little Shop of Horrors (covering the roles of Seymour and Orin Scrivello) and was a standby for multiple roles in the original Broadway cast of Monty Python's Spamalot, sharing the stage with stars like Tim Curry, Hank Azaria, and David Hyde Pierce, subsequently starring as Lancelot in the Las Vegas production. He also starred as Pongo in the national tour of The 101 Dalmatians Musical.

Jimmy originated the lead role of John in the musical john & jen (and can be heard on the original cast recording). Additionally, he spent two years performing as a member of the world-famous Blue Man Group (Tubes) at the Astor Place Theatre and performed in the high-energy aerial show De La Guarda.

He has tackled major classical and contemporary leading roles in Regional Theatre across the country, ranging from Professor Higgins in My Fair Lady to the titular character in Hamlet.

His screen credits include appearances on Chappelle’s Show, Lipstick Jungle, and the film Ghost Town.

In 2003, Ludwig founded Back40 Films. Through his production company, he co-created and hosted the wildly popular digital series “The Happy Hour Guys,” which heavily featured the craft beer industry and Broadway community (including the notable "Broadway Brews" charity project). He has also developed projects centered around his home region, including an adapted screenplay and feature trailer for "A Face in the Rock", based on Loren Graham's historical novel set in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

Originally from Iron River in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Ludwig did not start out as a theater major. He initially enrolled at the University of Michigan on a pre-med track. However, after taking an acting class on a whim, he pivoted entirely, earning his Bachelor's degree in Theatre and English at U of M before completing a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Acting from the University of Washington's prestigious Professional Actor Training Program.

An active union leader, Jimmy served for fifteen years as a National Councilor for Actors' Equity Association (representing professional stage managers and actors) and presently on NMU’s chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP).

Ludwig often preaches a practical "small business" approach to longevity in the entertainment industry, emphasizing that while talent is a prerequisite, real career sustainability relies on grit, adaptability, and a relentless work ethic.
