What are "Teaching Engagements"?
Teaching Engagements are offered 2-5 times a year by the Teaching & Learning Advisory Council. They are practical seminars, workshops, or lectures, usually 60 to 90 minutes long, aimed at improving teaching and learning at NMU by introducing innovative methods, new ideas and philosophies, or other techniques.

Using Social Media for Case Studies and Simulations -- Dr. Kristi Burdick, Nursing
April 13, 2012 12-1:30 PM -- Harden 109
Dr. Burdick will demonstrate a unique use of social media to simulate application of teaching material. No, this isn’t a “Be Facebook friends with your students!” workshop. This work won the best poster award at a recent Simulation conference at Drexel University. In brief, Kristi created a fictional every-person for Facebook who shared with “friends” (the class) her medical problems. The results have been very positive. Kristi will discuss how this methodology can be adapted for other disciplines.
Active Learning Practicalities & Technologies -- Dr. Jill Leonard, Biology
March 16, 2012 12-1 PM -- Harden 108
Dr. Leonard will share some of her experiences using Active Learning in her Biology classes, including activities in the recently constructed Active Learning classroom in the Harden Hall. She will focus on the practical aspects of integrating Active Learning techniques into a classroom environment and on demonstrating a few of the tools of Harden Hall's Active Learning Classroom. This talk will not focus on the physical sciences in particular, and should be of use for integrating methods into any classroom.
