The Schultz Family Foundation First-Generation Empowerment Scholarship

We invite you to apply for The Schultz Family Foundation First-Generation Empowerment Scholarship - an award crafted on the notion that while talent is everywhere, opportunity is not. 

The Scholarship: 

Up to $15,000 per year, for up to 4 years. 

This is a last dollar scholarship which means that students can use up to $15,000 per year to pay for educational expenses after all other financial aid has been applied. Educational expenses may include books, housing and meals, student activity fee, recreation pass, parking pass, transportation expenses among others. 

As a recipient of the scholarship, you will be included in the first cohort of the Schultz Family Foundation Fellows program. 

What is a Schultz Family Foundation Fellow: 

As a member of this cohort you will learn what it means to be a servant leader and successfully forge your path forward with opportunities for mentorship, faculty/staff support and a strong community ready to encourage you every step of the way.  

Minimum Requirements: 

  1. First Generation Student (NMU’s definition of First Gen: If your parent(s) or legal guardian(s) have not completed a bachelor's degree, then you are considered a first generation college student.)
  2. First Year, domestic, residential student (This is not available to global campus or international students.)
  3. Must live on NMU’s campus in either residence halls or, when eligible, on-campus  apartments.
  4. Applicants must submit a FAFSA and demonstrate financial need.
  5. Bachelor’s Degree seeking (Intentions of earning a Bachelor's degree, even if you start in a certificate or Associate program.)
  6. Able to move into on-campus housing 2 weeks prior to the start of the semester.

  2. Submit a FAFSA form, fafsa.gov
  3. Submit a Schultz Family Foundation First-Generation Empowerment Scholarship Application and additional materials.
  4. Deadline for submissions: March 30, 2025
  5. Decisions released: April 15, 2025.
