MIDYEAR 2024 Commencement Speakers
Student Commencement Speaker
Suzanna Guinn
Suzanna Guinn of Marquette said she considers nursing the “Swiss army knife” of undergraduate degrees, both for the skills and knowledge it encompasses and the wide range of career opportunities and potential work settings. Her academic major was inspired in part by her parents' experience in the field. They will no doubt be watching with pride as she delivers the student commencement address at Northern Michigan University's Dec. 14 ceremony.

Faculty Speaker
Matthew Jennings
Matthew Jennings, associate professor in the School of Clinical Sciences, is the students' choice to serve as faculty keynote speaker at Northern Michigan University's Dec. 14 commencement. He was selected through a nomination process overseen by ASNMU, the student government organization.
"I am humbled by this nomination and award," he said. "Knowing that the quiet efforts of faculty are noticed by students is motivating and refreshing. I genuinely enjoy the opportunity to work with the next generation of scientists, and find this the most rewarding part of teaching."

Honorary Degree
Frida Waara
Northern Michigan University alumna Frida Waara, a Marquette businesswoman, adventurer, storyteller and “U.P. ambassador,” will receive an honorary Doctor of Business degree at NMU's mid-year commencement this month. She graduated in 1977 with a bachelor's degree in English and a minor in French.
“Frankly, I was speechless when President Tessman informed me of this degree over the phone, and you know that doesn't happen often with me. It came out of the blue, but I'm so grateful for this honor and the chance to recognize all of the opportunities this university provides,” she said.
