Graduating Seniors,
Congratulations on the expected completion of your Baccalaureate Degree this semester! I know you must be anticipating graduation day with a sense of pride and accomplishment.
In 1986, an ASNMU initiative resulted in the inclusion of a student speaker at the fall and winter semester graduations. The student speaker address, five minutes in length, is in addition to the main graduation address. Past graduation attendees have commented on the excellence of the student address and how it added value to the ceremony. As your graduation day draws near, I invite you to consider applying to be the student speaker at the ceremony.
Student commencement speaker applications are available on the Dean of Students Office website at http://www.nmu.edu/dso/student-commencement-speaker. All applicants must submit a letter of recommendation from a faculty member. The application and recommendation letter must be turned in to the Dean of Students Office by 5:00 p.m., Monday, November 4, 2024. Applicants can submit their application in person at the Dean of Students Office in 2001 Hedgcock, or via email to dso@nmu.edu. Applicants will be notified of their audition time, to be held early during the following week of November 11.
I hope you will give strong consideration to applying and auditioning for the honor of presenting the student commencement address. To find out more on applying to become the Student Commencement Speaker for the graduation ceremony, tips on preparing your speech, or to access the application use the link above. If you have any questions, please contact the Dean of Students Office at (906) 227‑1700.
Sincerely,
Dana Hinckley,
ASNMU President
