  • Graduate applications processed for summer and fall (so far): 641

Summer

  • Education students are a large portion of summer applications and enrollment as teachers use their time for professional development. However, only 25% of applications were for the professional development designation. The other 75% of Education applicants applied for a masters, endorsement, or certificate, indicating that students see merit in our degree-bearing Ed programs.
  • Summer spotlight: Summer start programs are often overlooked in the traditional academic cycle. Athletic Training is a summer start program whose applications doubled this summer, and enrolled students have more than tripled.

Fall

  • Spotlight: the Psychology department programs and the Master of Social Work Program have increases in applications and enrollment, indicating that they are attracting quality applicants who are qualified and serious about attending the program.
  • Retention trend: headcount and SCH's from continuing graduate students has been on the increase while returning students has declined. This is a good indication that previous years' increased application and enrollment numbers resulted in students who are remaining enrolled and progressing in their degrees.

  • Fall Student Credit Hours (SCHs) total 3109, 21.6% (n=553) over last year.
  • Graduate applications processed for summer and fall (so far): 612

  • Much of summer enrollment comes from continuing students who take classes year round. Programs like the Excellence in Education grant provide funding for students to take research and scholarly work credits in the summer.
  • New programs like Applied Sport Psychology and Social Work are driving high applications and enrollments.
  • Education programs have high summer numbers as teachers enroll for their off time.
  • The Athletic Training program's applications and admit numbers are significantly up after an application model and reporting change.
  • Retention trend: headcount and SCH's from continuing graduate students has been on the increase. This is a good indication that previous years' increased application and enrollment numbers resulted in students who are remaining enrolled and progressing in their degrees.

We see these year over year increases as a result of increased engagement with prospective and current graduate students over the past few years. The College of Graduate Studies has a presence at community and campus events, graduate social and online platforms, offers campus visits and zoom visits, and works to connect to current grads at regular intervals. The graduate faculty have reached out to new populations and worked extremely hard to craft programs that are energetic and innovative. We believe graduate students chose NMU for excellence academics along with a robust community of faculty, peers, and academic support structures. This theory is being confirmed in graduate numbers.

Summary

  • Summer 2024 Semester: We are seeing an increase in graduate enrollment this summer. Here are some reasons for that:
    • Much of summer enrollment comes from continuing students who take classes year round. Programs like the Excellence in Education grant provide funding for students to take research and scholarly work credits in the summer.
    • New programs like Applied Sport Psychology and Social Work are driving high summer applications and enrollments.
    • Education programs have high summer numbers as teachers enroll for their off time.
    • The Athletic Training program's applications and admit numbers are significantly up after an application model and reporting change.
  • Fall 2024 Semester: We are also seeing an increase in fall graduate enrollment. Fall numbers show high applicant numbers. Applicant numbers have started to convert to active students as program deadlines pass and departments review and begin to admit students. This process will move slowly forward throughout the summer as students are admitted and meet with their faculty advisors to create their plans of study.
    • The Master of Social Work program saw an increase in applications and admissions for both their summer and fall start deadlines. Their demand for the program continues to be higher than their program capacity.
    • The Nursing programs, DNP and MNP, are admitting this year. These programs are on a cohort admission model.
    • Psychology has seen growth across the program, from higher application counts at the outset to a higher percentage of enrolled students at this point in time.
  • It is important to note that high applicant numbers and high enrollment numbers create an increased workload for the graduate admissions team in the College of Graduate Studies and Research. They process all graduate applications and work with students and faculty members to establish plans of study and individual course creation.

Summary

  • Winter 2024 graduate credit hour enrollment is up over 800 SCHs from last year. Part of this trend is driven by the cyclical cohorts beginning this semester as well as the special funding for educators.
  • Summer 2024 Semester: Applications and admissions are up around 30% for the summer semester. The fact that the percentage of application and admission increases are about the same tells us that gains in applications are not only casual applications, they are students who are serious about attendance.
  • Fall 2024 Semester: Fall numbers are very early still, but currently show high applicant numbers. Applicant numbers will start to convert to active students once program deadlines pass and departments review and begin to admit students in February and March, but have not started to move that direction yet.

Summary

  • Winter 2024 graduate credit hour enrollment is up over last year. This result is largely coming from the cyclical cohorts admitting this semester as well as the special funding for educators.
    • Winter enrollment relies on continuing students. High continuing enrollment is an indicator of positive retention and persistence.
  • Winter 2024 Semester:
    • The increase in winter applications is still rolling over into winter admits. With no deadline to enroll, many students wait until close to the start of the semester to sign up for classes.
    • Nearly all winter-admitting grad programs are tracking an increase in applications and admissions. Notable programs Master of Business Administration (37%, +10) and Public Administration (150%, +9).
    • New programs in Health and Human Performance are driving increased winter enrollment for a department-wide increase of 700%/+7.
    • Again, note that Winter numbers are driven up by the Nursing NP cohort, as well as the Education scholarships enrolling teachers.
  • Summer 2024 Semester: Summer semester applications are on par with last years' numbers, but acceptances are not yet truly measurable. Much of summer enrollment comes from continuing students who take classes year round.
    • The new Health and Human Performance programs are driving higher than average summer applications and enrollments in that field.
  • Fall 2024 Semester: Fall numbers are very early still, but currently show high applicant numbers. Applicant numbers will start to convert to active students once program deadlines pass and departments review and begin to admit students in February and March.
    • The Master of Social Work program has a increase in applications (97%, +37) this year, and already has more applicants than can be accepted. They have a full cohort going into the next year.
    • Many programs, like Creative Writing and Biology, have full cohorts every year and admit at capacity consistently for Fall semester.

*Accelerated program applicants are undergraduate applicants who applied for either the 4+1 Accounting program or the 3+2 Sports Science/Athletic Training master's program.

Summary

  • Fall Graduate enrollment has held steady as compared to previous years as students shift classes at the start of the semester.
  • Fall student credit hours are 17% higher than last year, with a 13% increase in headcount.
  • Winter applicants are actively applying now and we expect to see more applications as well as a boost in admissions from these applicants over the next couple of months. Many of the programs enrolling for winter are programs with rolling deadlines and non-traditional students, like Clinical Molecular Diagnostics.
    • One exception to this is the Doctor of Nursing Practice program, which has an October deadline and a Winter start. These are cohort students, so we see fluctuations in applications based on cohort enrollment dates.
  • Note that there are no enrolled numbers listed for Winter 2024 since enrollment is not yet open.
  • Winter applications are still early but are currently tracking consistently and a little over Winter 2023. This is largely due to the DNP cohort, and the continued Talent Together and Grow Your Own funding for educators, increasing students in programs like Learning Disabilities and Educational Instruction.

  • Graduate enrollment is up 30.4%, with a 627 headcount.
  • Student credit hours are 17.7% higher than last year.
  • We are continuing to trend strong in Fall 2023 application, admits, and enrollment in the College of Graduate Studies as compared to Fall 2022.
  • Some of the factors leading to the increase this year include:
    • New state funding for educators leading to huge increases in School of Education, Leadership, and Public Service enrollments
    • Steep increase in International Students
  • August is an intense time period for graduate enrollment as student scholarships and funding sources become available, returning students get serious about re-enrolling, and faculty finish individualized course plans. In these first weeks of classes we are seeing rapid adjustments up and down as students finalize their schedules and the last admits are added.

Summary

Please note the update in reporting information: added enrollment % change, and admit count (in addition to the active admit count), and removed application yield percentage.

  • Upward trend in Fall 2023 applications and admits in the College of Graduate Studies as compared to Fall 2022.
  • Factors include new state funding for educators and high interest in programs like Social Work, Psychology, and Interdisciplinary Studies.
  • Application and admit increase not yet reflected in current enrolled student count. As faculty return to campus, these tend to catch up to admit numbers because grad students work with their faculty to set up individual courses and plans of study.
  • International applications and admissions are up 124%. International interest is bounding back from covid restrictions very quickly.
  • Student credit hours continue to trend higher than last year. This is likely due to more programs that have cohort models and accreditation requirements, like the MSW, ABA certification, and Athletic Training.
