Payment Plans

Northern Michigan University offers three options for paying tuition and fees and housing charges. The options are designed to assist students and their families in meeting their financial obligations to the university by the required tuition and fees due dates.

Students must either pay tuition, fees, and housing payments (less applicable financial aid) by the stated due date or sign up for an "easy pay" or "deferral payment" plan by that date.

A late fee of $100 per semester will be assessed for tuition and fee payments that are not received by the tuition due date.

Withholding Taxes

International students on nonimmigrant status visas ("F", "J", "M", or "Q") are subject to federal withholding tax on the amount of scholarship income they receive above the cost of their qualified tuition and fees.  The current withholding rates are 14% for documented international students and 30% for any student whose citizenship status is unknown or undocumented.

If applicable, the withholding tax amount will appear on your eBill each semester after scholarships are disbursed. You are responsible for paying the full amount. Withheld taxes are NOT included in athletic scholarships.

Each tax season (January - April), students will be required to file U.S. taxes. At this time, they may received a portion of the amount paid in withholding taxes in refund, though this is not guaranteed. The amount refunded is based on tax treaties between the student's country of citizenship and the U.S. The IPO will send out information about taxes each year.
