About the Team

The Northern Michigan University Women's Rugby Club, aka the Northstars, started in 1994. Since its establishment, the club has won several tournaments around the Midwest and has been runner-up winners in National tournaments. During our 2021 conference season we ranked 3rd in the nation for our division. The team is a part of the Great Waters Women's Rugby Conference. During the fall season, four regular season matches (two home and two away) are played throughout Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula. During the spring and summer, the team participates in tournaments throughout the states. In the spring season of 2022 the team went to Nashville, TN and participated in the NashBash tournament. There are also tryouts and camps hosted in WI for the Select Side Women's Team of Wisconsin. Selects is a great opportunity to play against some of the best women’s rugby teams in the United States. Select side rugby is also a pathway to higher up rugby including USA U23 team and international teams. Between practices and games, the team strives to hold a strong bond with everyone who plays when off the field. Volunteering, fundraising, and general team get-togethers help keep a fun yet competitive atmosphere around the club. The Northstars base themselves on hard work, upholding traditions and team unity.

Tryouts: We do not hold tryouts because everyone is welcome to enjoy and play the game of rugby. Practice times will be emailed out to anyone interested in playing the beginning of each semester.

No experience is necessary. No matter what size, shape, or athletic ability, there is a position for anyone who comes out and gives rugby a try. Games are played in all weather – rain, snow, or shine. The only time a game will be delayed or canceled is if it is lightning.

Time Commitment

Travel: The team travels to Wisconsin for away games during the fall season. Departure is usually early afternoon on Fridays. Games are on Saturdays between 11am and 1pm.

Practice: Practices are held at the pitch (intramural fields on the corner of Wright and Lincoln Street) It is strongly encouraged to attend at least 2, preferably all 3, practice; however school and class obligations do come first.
