Alejandra Magaña, LMSW, was born and raised in Santa Ana, California, and is a first-generation college graduate who followed a non-traditional path to NMU. She first attended NMU in the summer of 2004 but left after the Fall semester. Despite her departure, the "Always North" spirit of NMU never wavered, and she found her way back to Northern in 2010, graduating in 2014 with her Bachelor's degree in Biology.

While at NMU, Alejandra was actively involved in student life and community service. She participated in the Latinx Student Union, Queers & Allies, and volunteered with the Big Brothers Big Sisters Lunch Buddy Program and the City of Marquette Elderly Errands Program.

After graduation, Alejandra moved to New York City, where she began working at a homeless outreach nonprofit. She advanced to become Senior Director, overseeing the homeless outreach programs for the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens, as well as Midtown Manhattan. In her role, Alejandra helped expand several initiatives she is passionate about, including immigrant services and the integration of human and pet health for individuals experiencing unsheltered homelessness. She collaborated with colleagues to establish the first One Health Clinic events in New York City, which aim to bridge the gap between human and pet healthcare for people experiencing homelessness. In 2021, she earned her Master's in Social Work from Fordham University.

Alejandra moved to Chicago in 2024 with her wife, Dr. Lianna M. Drobatz, and their dog Huck. She now works for the City of Chicago as a Director in the Homeless Services Division.

"I attribute my experience at NMU with laying the foundation for my career and personal growth. I'm excited to work within the Alumni Advisory Board to continue fostering community, belonging, and Wildcat pride among fellow alumni. Go Cats!"
