Biology Special Project Award - Guidelines for Proposals

Purpose: These awards are intended to provide support for activities not directly associated with a university class, or activities outside those covered by the Undergraduate and Graduate Research Awards. The activities may include, but are not limited to: bringing seminar speakers and scientists to campus for the purpose of enhancing student education; organizing special events (symposia, presentations, etc.); fees for student publications; participation in a presentation at professional conferences; and other professionally-related activities not covered by the Undergraduate Research Award and the Graduate Research Award.

Eligibility: Faculty members with appointments in the department and individual students (undergraduate and graduate) associated with faculty members with appointments in the department.

Deadlines: Special Project Awards will be made on a rolling basis, but at least half of the funds allocated will be earmarked to support student presentations at summer conferences. Potential applicants must make their intention to apply known to the Chair of the Budget Committee as early as possible.

Proposal Guidelines:  Proposals must include: proposers name and contact information; brief description of the project with sufficient detail to demonstrate the value of the project to undergraduate and graduate student education; a timeline of events required for the project; and a budget for expenditures. Budget items must include annotations (or hyperlinks) that demonstrate the projected costs are justified. Budgets must note other sources of funding that have been or may be awarded. Proposals must not exceed two (2) single-spaced pages in a 10 point font. Proposals from students must include a letter of support from a departmental faculty member as an appendix.

Limit on Awards: Awards will typically be made for up to $1000, but applicants are encouraged to use this award to seek additional support through the Dean and Provost’s “Special Project” Funding award lines.

Distribution of Funds: Money will not be distributed from the Special Project Award unless the Budget Committee has made a positive recommendation for funding that was approved by the department. The Department of Biology Office will handle the allocation, distribution, reimbursement, and accounting of Special Project Award monies.
