Northern Michigan University’s DeVos Art Museum will sponsor two visiting artist presentations in February in conjunction with its “Beyond Green: Toward a Sustainable Art” exhibition. The public is invited to attend free of charge.

On Thursday, Feb. 5, Paul Wittenbraker will discuss collaboration and participation among universities and communities, particularly through art. It is a topic the artist and faculty member at Grand Valley State University has addressed in Grand Rapids. At GVSU, Wittenbraker started the Civil Studio Project, which establishes a temporary studio each semester, allowing students to interact with, make art about and volunteer in the Grand Rapids community. Wittenbraker’s public presentation is at 6 p.m. in Mead Auditorium in the West Science Building.

Steve Frykholm, creative director for Herman Miller Inc., will give the next presentation at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, in room 165 of the Art and Design Building. Frykholm became Herman Miller’s first internal graphic designer soon after graduating from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He has witnessed his employer’s embrace of green design methods and will talk about how the shift to sustainable practices has impacted his career.

            The ‘Beyond Green’ exhibition explores sustainable design. It runs through March 27.  Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, noon to 8 p.m. Thursday and 1-4 p.m. on weekends.
