Fulbright scholar Djeneba Traore of Mali will present “The Empowerment of the African Woman” on Tuesday, Feb. 3, at Northern Michigan University. The public is invited to attend the event, which begins at 7:30 p.m. in Mead Auditorium in the West Science Building.

Traore is a lecturer at the University of Bamako and the author of several publications on the role and place of women in Mali. During her NMU visit, she also will meet with students and faculty, addressing such topics as the effects of HIV/AIDS on women and children; female genital cutting; Malian development issues and government social policy; and contemporary African literature, along with its oral tradition.

Traore is traveling to Marquette from Indiana University, where she is an international scholar. Her NMU visit is made possible with a grant from the King-Chavez-Parks Initiative Visiting Professors Program, with assistance from the NMU College of Arts and Sciences, College of Professional Studies and Student Leadership Fellowship Program.
