As part of the 50th anniversary of the filming of Anatomy of a Murder in Marquette County, Northern Michigan University will host a filmmaking symposium from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, June 29. The event will be held in Mead Auditorium, room 2701 in the West Science Building.

Six scholars will give presentations on various aspects of the film. Keynote speaker Foster Hirsch will focus on director Otto Preminger. Hirsch is a professor of film at Brooklyn College in New York and recently published a biography of Preminger. Janet Lockwood, director of the Michigan Film Office, will discuss the office’s work and its role in facilitating filmmaking in Michigan. Daniel Truckey, director of the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Museum at NMU, will address the movie’s groundbreaking social commentary. Local attorney Paul Lehto will give a presentation on the issues of legal ethics presented by the movie. Joanie Hansen, author of Anatomy of “Anatomy”: The Making of a Movie, will talk about her book and favorite stories on the making of the movie. Leonard Heldreth, NMU emeritus professor of English, will offer a film critic’s review of Anatomy.
