MARQUETTE, Mich.—Northern Michigan University’s Seaborg Center is participating in the statewide “Algebra for All” initiative, which offers a free professional development opportunity for middle school and high school mathematics teachers. Gov. Jennifer Granholm announced the program in her State of the State address. Its goal is to ensure that teachers receive the training and tools required to help students succeed under the Michigan Merit Curriculum’s increased emphasis on math.

The eight-session program will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at NMU on the following dates: Sept. 19 and 25, Oct. 23, Nov. 20, Dec. 11, Jan. 8, Feb. 5 and March 5. Participating teachers will receive a free graphing calculator and other technologies. They may also earn the following credits: graduate math, 3; professional development (989), 3.5; or SB-CEUs, 9. Advance registration is requested by Sept. 11 by calling 227-2002.

Algebra for All blends face-to-face and online delivery methods. It promotes teaching from the functions perspective outlined in High School Content Standards and Expectations (HSCE). Participants will explore functions algebraically through equations, numerically with tables, and graphically and realistically with real-world modeling.
