Friday 2, 2010
MARQUETTE, Mich.—Northern Michigan University’s music department recently held a performance competition for music majors. Saxophonist Tony Barrette of Negaunee won the $1,000 prize with his rendition of Jacques Ibert’s “Concertino de Camera.”

Eight students nominated by their instructors participated. Music faculty selected the winner. According to Don Grant, head of the NMU music department, an anonymous donor contributed a gift to the department and the faculty was able to decide how to use it. Grant said they opted to increase student involvement through a performance competition.
