MARQUETTE, Mich.—The Northern Michigan University International Performing Arts Series announces a change in its 2010-2011 lineup. Irish-American fiddle master Liz Carroll will give a concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5, in Jamrich Hall 102. She replaces the Finnish duo Lepisto and Lehti, who had to cancel their performance. Tickets already purchased for Lepisto and Lehti will be honored at the door for Carroll’s show.   

It has been an impressive decade for the fiddler. Carroll’s 2009 recording with John Doyle, Double Play, was nominated for a Grammy this year, making her the first American-born artist nominated for playing Irish music. On St. Patrick’s Day 2009, she traveled to Washington, D.C., to play for fellow Chicagoan, President Barack Obama, at the annual St. Patrick’s Day luncheon. In 2005, Carroll became a member of String Sisters, a sextet of fiddlers from America, Ireland, the Shetland Islands and Norway. Their 2009 Live album was shortlisted for a Grammy. Carroll published her first book of compositions earlier this year.

The previously released solo albums, Lake Effect and Lost in the Loop, used Carroll’s hometown of Chicago as the influence for an outpouring of new compositions. The latter led the Irish Echo newspaper to proclaim her the Traditional Musician of the Year. She has also received a National Heritage Award Fellowship and Mayor Richard Daley proclaimed Sept. 18, 1999 as “Liz Carroll Day” in Chicago.

Concert tickets are on sale at all NMU EZ Ticket outlets. Prices are: students, $5 advance/$6 door; NMU faculty/staff and seniors 60+, $13/$15; and general public, $18/$20.
