THEATER CLASSES PRESENT FINAL PERFORMANCES

Wednesday 24, 2010
MARQUETTE, Mich.— Northern Michigan University theater classes will present three end-of-semester performance events that are free and open to the public.

The directing, acting I and lighting classes’ “Ten Minute Play Festival” will feature a collection of scenes directed, acted and lit by NMU students.  It will be staged at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, and Thursday, Dec. 2, in the Black Box Theatre.

A “Musical Theater Cabaret” will be offered at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, also in the Black Box Theatre. Students will sing songs from some of the most popular shows of all time, including “Loathing” from Wicked, “Matchmaker” from Fiddler on the Roof, “What do the Simple Folk Do” from Camelot and “Anything You Can Do” from Annie Get Your Gun.

Finally, the advanced stagecraft class has been learning about different rigs to fly performers in preparation for next semester’s production of Peter Pan. The class will end with a 20-minute dance /movement piece titled “The Four Seasons” that features flying dancers, water, silks, webs and other visual effects. It is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, in Forest Roberts Theatre.

“This is utterly unique,” said Ansley Valentine, director of theater at NMU. “I have never seen or heard of an undergraduate program doing anything like this. And because of the rigging and flying, it will be visually stunning.”
