MARQUETTE, Mich.—Northern Michigan University will honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with special events and a film series. All activities are free of charge and open to the public, unless otherwise indicated.
Joan Morgan, a former executive editor of Essence magazine, will kick off the celebration with a presentation at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 17, in the Whitman Hall commons. She is an award-winning journalist and author of When Chickenheads Come Home to Roost: My Life as a Hip-Hop Feminist. A native of Jamaica, Morgan was raised in the south Bronx and graduated from Wesleyan University. She is a visiting scholar at Vanderbilt University. NMU students are invited to participate in “Share Your Dreams” from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, in the Temaki and Tea dining area in C.B. Hedgcock. Students can record responses that complete the sentence, "I/We have a dream that …" in a way relevant to King’s teachings. The responses will be blended with the actual “I Have a Dream” speech to create a Wildcat version.
An open mic poetry slam/music event is scheduled at 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, in the multipurpose room of the Woodland Park Apartments. Participants should share poetic, instrumental or other works that fit King’s teachings.
A King Birthday Bash and Dance will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight Friday, Jan. 21, in the Whitman Hall commons. Double Trouble DJs will provide the music and NMU Dining Services will provide cake, snacks and refreshments.
To continue honoring King’s commitment to service and social justice, NMU’s Multicultural Education and Resource Center, along with the Great Lakes Center for Youth Development, will sponsor a film series. The following movies will be shown, in order, at 7 p.m. Mondays, Jan. 24-Feb. 21, in the Whitman Hall commons: Deep Down: A Story from the Heart of Coal Country; Taking Root; The Calling; A Village Called Versailles; and Garbage Dreams.
