NMU WinterFest Feb. 13-20

MARQUETTE, Mich.—Northern Michigan University’s 2011 WinterFest will be held Sunday, Feb. 13, through Sunday, Feb. 20.
The theme for this year’s event is “Where the Frost Are We?” Several activities are planned for the week.
An airband competitionfor NMU students is scheduled at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 14, in Jamrich Hall 102. Participants will use wardrobe, lyrics and air instruments to put on a concert. Community residents are invited to an open skate from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15, in the Berry Events Center. The event features free skating, hot chocolate and music. Rental skates are available, but because of limited quantities, participants are encouraged to bring their own. Comedian Tracey Ashley will perform at 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, in Jamrich Hall’s 103. Ashley has been nominated as Best Female Performer by Campus Activities Magazine in 2008. She was a semifinalist on NBC’s Last Comic Standing and has performed at the Las Vegas Comedy Festival.
The NMU Annual Ball will take place at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, in the University Center Great Lakes Rooms. Hosted by the Steppin’ Out Ballroom Dance Club, this will be an opportunity for students, faculty, staff and community members to dine in style and dance to the Westerly Winds Big Band. Dinner tickets are $8 for students with a meal plan, $15 for students without and $25 for community members. Admittance is free after 8 p.m.
The Human Sled-Dog Races will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 20, in the field outside Payne and Halverson Halls. Teams of five will pull a rider along a circular course using either a store-bought or homemade sled.
