NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH AT NMU

           MARQUETTE, Mich.—November is Native American Heritage Month and several related events are planned at Northern Michigan University. The full schedule follows and admission is free unless otherwise noted. For more information, contact the NMU Center for Native American Studies at 227-1397.

            Wednesday, Nov. 2: Jim St. Arnold of the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission will give a presentation at 6 p.m. in Mead Auditorium in the West Science Building.

 

            Friday, Nov. 4: 11th Annual First Nations Food Taster, 5-7 p.m. at the Jacobetti Center. The menu consists of traditional and contemporary Native dishes with three sisters casserole, wild rice, hominy soup, fry bread and desserts. Tickets are available in advance at the Center for Native American Studies in Whitman Hall ($5 NMU students with ID and elders; $12 general public) or at the door ($7 NMU students with ID, children 13 and under and elders; $15 general public). Children's tickets are available only at the door.

 

            Wednesday, Nov. 9: The film Barking Water will screen at 7 p.m. in Jamrich 102.

 

            Friday, Nov. 11: The NMU International Performing Arts Series will host a music workshop with guest artist Digging Roots at 10 a.m. in Reynolds Recital Hall. A Digging Roots-Anishinaabeg Blues concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. at Peterson Auditorium in Ishpeming. Tickets are available at all NMU EZ Ticket outlets. Prices are: students, $5 advance, $6 door; NMU employees/seniors 60+, $13/$15; general public, $18/$20.

 

            Saturday, Nov. 12: The Upper Peninsula Folklife Festival presents a workshop titled “Making Wild Rice Sticks” at 8:30 a.m. at the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center in 105 Cohodas Hall. Roger Labine of the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa has been harvesting manoomin, or wild rice, his entire life. He will lead the workshop. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for students. Call 227-1219 for more information.

 

            Wednesday, Nov. 16: The film Older Than America will screen at 7 p.m. in Jamrich 102.

 

            Friday, Nov. 18 and Monday, Nov. 21: Informational gatherings to learn about an indigenous foods research project. Select from one of the two sessions: 11 a.m. Friday in Mead Auditorium at NMU; or 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Marquette Commons.

 

            Wednesday, Nov. 30: Public reading from the forthcoming anthology published by the NMU Press titled Voice on the Water: Great Lakes Native America Now, 7 p.m. in Jamrich 105. The publication and this presentation were made possible by a grant from the Michigan Humanities Council, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
