Blueberry Classic Golf Outing Returns

Friday 29, 2012

MARQUETTE, Mich.—The second annual Blueberry Classic golf outing is scheduled Friday, July 27, at the Northern Michigan University Golf Course in Chocolay Township. It is designed to raise scholarship funds for NMU students who encounter unforeseen financial challenges. The advance registration deadline is Friday, July 13.

An NMU Student Flexible Aid Fund created by the event is a resource to which students can apply for help in covering costs such as auto repairs, medical bills, child care and course expenses not covered by financial aid.

Six students received help during the 2011-12 academic year from the $16,000 raised at the inaugural event. One wrote, “You have given my wife and I the opportunity to continue our college education without the worry of not being able to pay off our hospital bill. … Your kindness will not be taken for granted or forgotten. We hope to be able to give the same aid to people in need just as you have done for us. The kindness you have shown us will be passed down. After all, someone else is bound to have a curve ball thrown at them as well. Thank you again for your generosity.”

The 2012 golf outing will feature fun activities throughout the course for golfers regardless of experience level and a blueberry menu put together by NMU executive chef Nathan Mileski. Activities include golf cart decorating at the beginning of the day, special hole activities such as “Blind Mice,” “Luck of the Draw,” Relay to the Hole” and an opportunity to win a car with a hole in one. Chair massages will be offered at the end of the day. All golfers will also have the chance to win an NMU trivia contest with prizes.

“Most everything that people saw or participated in last year will be there again this year, but they might be in a different location or improved upon,” said Joanne Roy, chair of the organizing committee.
