MARQUETTE, Mich .—  A series of events is scheduled to take place throughout February at Northern Michigan University in honor of Black History Month.

            At 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, in the Whitman Hall commons, a documentary titled “The Loving Story” will be shown. The documentary is about Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple living in Virginia in the 1950s, and the Supreme Court case, Loving V. Virginia.

            Another film, “American History X,” will be shown at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, in the Nicolet Room of the University Center. It is about a former neo-Nazi skinhead who tries to prevent his younger brother from going down the wrong path.

            Two speakers, Ilyasah Shabazz and Ta-Nehisi Coates, will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, in the Great Lakes Rooms of the University Center. Shabazz is the daughter of Malcolm X and Betty Shabazz and will discuss her memoir, “Growing Up X,” the legacy of her parents and the lessons she has learned from them. Coates is a senior editor at “The Atlantic” and is the author of the memoir, “The Beautiful Struggle.”

            The final event for February is the Soul Food Luncheon, which will take place from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, in the Jacobetti Complex. The menu will include a choice of fried or baked chicken, mashed potatoes with gravy, baked macaroni and cheese, green beans and corn bread. There will also be drinks and dessert.

            Tickets for the lunch are $7 for NMU students with ID, $10 for the general public $5 for children 6-12 years old and free for kids age 5 and younger. Tickets can be purchased from the Multicultural Education Resource Center (MERC), which is located in 3001 Hedgcock.
