MARQUETTE -- The contract of Northern Michigan University men’s basketball coach Doug Lewis will not be renewed, according to NMU Athletic Director Forrest Karr.

Lewis has been the Wildcats’ head coach for the last three seasons.

This past year, Northern went 5-21 overall and 4-18 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for last place in the North Division, the same position the team has held for three years.

“We thank Doug for his work with the Wildcat program and wish him well in his future endeavors,” said Karr. “We’ll begin a national search for our next men’s basketball coach immediately.”

Lewis compiled a 23-55 NMU record. In 2011-12, Northern was 9-17 overall and 5-14 in conference play. In 2010-11, the ‘Cats were 9-17 and 4-14 in overall and league action.

Lewis has a 10-year overall coaching mark of 148-116, which includes seven years at Central State University (Wilberforce, Ohio), an NCAA Division II independent school, where he served as head coach prior to coming to Northern.
