MARQUETTE, Mich. — Two Northern Michigan University professors recently received grants to fund research and creative endeavors.

Melissa Matuscak, director and curator for the DeVos Art Museum, received $4,000 to support the cleaning and restoration of 20 paintings by N. Cecelia Kettunen, a Finnish artist. These paintings are part of a gift to the museum before Kettunen’s death. The restoration will improve the possibility of making the collection a traveling exhibition about the artist. This grant was from the Finlandia Foundation.

Jason Bishop received $5,000 from the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. He is working on a project related to aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities among children and adolescents to understand how children think about their ability to complete tasks related to fundamental motor skills. Graduate research assistants will help consult school teachers, collect data and perform data analysis. Bishop teaches in NMU’s health, physical education and recreation department.
