MARQUETTE— Two events honoring Latino Heritage Month will be held at Northern Michigan University.

            A public presentation by Christine Chavez, granddaughter of Cesar Chavez, is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, in the Ontario Room of the University Center. Latina Magazine recently named her one of the top Latinas for her involvement in civil rights issues, particularly marriage equality.

A salsa-making competition and hot chili pepper-eating contest will take place at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, in the Hedgcock Atrium. Different salsas are being judged by three men named Jose: Jose “AJ” Lara, the graduate assistant in the Multicultural Education and Resource Center (MERC); Jose Garcia, an academic counselor in the Academic and Career Advisement Center; and Jose Mino, a graduate assistant in the Dean of Students Office. A prize will be awarded for best salsa.
