MARQUETTE— November is Native American Heritage Month and Northern Michigan University’s Center for Native American Studies has events planned throughout the month.

            The First Nations Food Taster will take place from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, in the Jacobetti Complex. This is the 13th annual event and features indigenous foods for participants to enjoy. This event is a fundraiser for the “Learning to Walk Together” traditional pow wow, which is held in the spring. Advance tickets are $5 for NMU students and $12 for the general public and can be purchased at the Center for Native American Studies or at the Multicultural Education and Resource Center (MERC) in 3001 Hedgcock. Tickets at the door are $7 for students/children and $15 for the general public.

            A two-day workshop on birchbark necklaces with porcupine quills will be hosted by Elizabeth Kimewon. This workshop takes place from 1-5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, in 130 Whitman Hall. Space is limited to 15 participants, so anyone interested is encouraged to contact the Center for Native American Studies in advance.

            Two movie screenings are scheduled, both at 7 p.m. in the Whitman Hall commons: Christmas in the Clouds on Monday, Nov. 25; and Smoke Signals on Tuesday, Nov. 26. The movies are hosted by MERC. They are free and open to the public.
