NCLL Presents 'ROCKLAND' Program
The Northern Center for Learning presents “Yoopera! Local History Comes to Life in Opera and Story” on Tuesday, April 15. Yoopera! is a one-hour documentary about the making of Jukka Linkola's opera ROCKLAND, which depicts the 1906 copper mine strike and its impact on the many Finnish workers.
Erin Smith, documentary co-producer, will show scenes from the opera. She will also discuss its promotion through The Story Line Project that involved U.P. school children and adults writing about their ancestors who created new lives for themselves in the United States. The stories with photos were printed on cloth panels and displayed throughout the Upper Peninsula for the July 2011 premiere of ROCKLAND.
The program runs from 7-9 p.m. in room 101B of the NMU Superior Dome. It is free for NCLL and League of Finnish American Society members and $5 for non-members. Register by Friday, April 4, by calling 227-2979.
