NMU Theater Season Announced

Thursday 24, 2014

MARQUETTE, Mich.- Northern Michigan University has announced its 2014-15 schedule of mainstage and studio theater productions.

Leading off the season will be A Paper Tiger In The Rain by David Swanson, winner of the Albert and Mildred Panowski Playwriting Award at NMU. A man promoted to editor in chief of a financially troubled newspaper attempts to save the paper while also winning the heart of his newly widowed former flame. The play is a semifinalist for the Playwrights First Award at the National Art Club in New York City. It will be featured Sept. 30-Oct. 4 and Oct. 7-11 in the James A. Panowski Black Box Theatre.

Chicago, the Broadway and movie musical, will take the Forest Roberts Theatre stage Nov. 19-22. It is set during the roaring 20s in the Windy City, where the biggest celebrities are those with the heftiest crime careers.

The winter semester opens with Tribes Feb. 10-21 in the Black Box Theatre. It is the story of a deaf man raised inside the fiercely politically incorrect cocoon of his parent's house.

Little Shop of Horrors, a gleefully gruesome musical spoof of the 1960 Roger Corman film. It revolves around Seymour, a hapless florist shop worker who offers his tender love and care to a plant that feeds on human blood. The musical will be staged April 15-18 in Forest Roberts Theatre.

Show times are at 7:30 p.m., with an additional 1 p.m. Saturday matinee for most mainstage offerings.

Studio productions this season and their respective dates are (all in the Black Box Theatre unless otherwise noted): Haunted Theatre, Oct. 24-26, Forest Roberts Theatre; The 10 Minute Play Festival, Dec. 3-4; A Coupla White Chicks Sitting Around Talking, March. 13-14; and the NMU Dance Concert, March 29, Forest Roberts Theatre.
