Camp for Native American Students Emphasizes Traditions

MEDIA ADVISORY: The Northern Michigan University Center for Native American Studies will host a free two-day Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) camp for Native American high school students Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 27-28. Throughout the weekend, students will learn the origins and traditional techniques of fire starting, tool crafting, foraging, plant identification, cooking, shelter construction, art and storytelling. Thr camp will emphasize Anishinaabe culture, language and learning in the outdoors. 

Media are welcome to cover the event. It runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days at the former McDonald Elementary School (530 Mitchell Street in Gwinn).
