Northern Michigan University’s surgical technology program has been awarded continuing accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). A peer review and on-site visit recognized the program’s “substantial compliance” with nationally established standards.

“Two people came to campus and were very impressed with the documentation we presented,” said Rick Lopez, director of NMU’s surgical technology program. “We made it through the process without any citations that required corrective action. I was told that is highly uncommon. They also were impressed with the support this program receives from the university, the regional medical community and outlying affiliates where students get their clinical experience.”

Site visits occur on a 10-year cycle, but Lopez said Northern’s program is monitored annually for compliance with outcomes assessment thresholds. It has to keep up with accreditation review committee updates related to curriculum and caseload requirements.

Only students who graduate from accredited programs can sit for the certified surgical technologist (CST) national board exam required for employment in the field.  “It is very helpful to have that distinction of being an accredited program as students are searching for educational options,” Lopez said.

The CAAHEP’s next comprehensive evaluation of the program, including an on-site review, will occur no later than 2024.
