Thursday 4, 2015

G. Blue Brazelton is the new leader of the master’s degree program in higher education in student affairs at Northern Michigan University. He recently joined the faculty in NMU’s School of Education, Leadership and Public Service. Brazelton has extensive experience in the field, previously serving as a student affairs practitioner at multiple institutions. He also is an advocate for under-represented groups in higher education, including first-generation and low socio-economic college students.

“Blue is the leader we’ve been searching for," said Joe Lubig, director of NMU’s School of Education, Leadership and Public Service. "His enthusiasm for higher education and student affairs and his scholarship in the discipline will develop leaders who have a deep understanding of the practical application of theory in the field. Blue’s advocacy for under-represented student groups will allow NMU to clearly articulate and operationalize our mission as it relates to these populations. His leadership will enable all students in this program to be catalysts for positive change.”

Brazelton is a founding member and previous research team leader of the National Study of LGBTQ Student Success.

“My personal research agenda focuses on student success in places where the educational experience intersects with technology, student motivations or sources of support,” Brazelton said. “I am committed to the potential of student affairs in providing the additional support and care to ensure that all students are successful in higher education. I’m also excited to help develop the next generation of professionals in the field.”

Brazelton is a doctoral candidate in Michigan State University’s higher, adult and lifelong education program. He earned his bachelor’s degree in multicultural American literature and the philosophy of science at Texas Tech University. He also holds a master’s in education in college student personnel at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
